Illinois Soldiers Dying at Fort Blakeley

There is an accounting of 63 Illinois soldiers that either died on the Blakeley Battlefield, April 9, 1865, or died shortly thereafter from wounds received there. This list is comprised of those soldiers that were buried in Mobile's National Cemetery or buried other than in Mobile, and/or for whom the facts are unknown. Walking through Magnolia Cemetery at Mobile, which includes the National Cemetery, it is obvious that the accounting is incomplete. There are many, many markers in both the Union and Confederate sections which simply say, "UNKNOWN."

There were 26 Illinois Regiments that were stationed on the eastern shore of Mobile Bay during the final days of the Mobile Campaign. The 76th Illinois suffered casualities amounting to 30, approximately half of the total loss from the state of Illinois. The list below divides the casualties into the 76th and the remaining Illinois regiments.
