Organized at Camp Butler, Ill., and mustered in August 21, 1862. Moved to Louisville, Ky., August 23-25, thence moved to Covington, Ky., and duty there during Kirby Smith's threatened attack on Cincinnati, Ohio, September 1-17. Regiment lost during service 5 Officers and 109 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 167 Enlisted men by disease. Total 281.
